Coast Guard Museum: Time to think small

I write in regard to Fort Trumbull, one of New London’s favorite topics. A recent letter referred to Neild Oldham as an unsung hero of the fight to save the Fort Trumbull neighborhood. There are additional unsung heroes of that effort. But that is history. The site sadly sits empty today. The proposed Coast Guard Museum is not history but is mired down by a flawed plan. Perhaps a smaller museum in a different location would work.

A number of years ago I spent an enjoyable afternoon at the small museum at the Academy with a five-year-old boy and his mother. A museum downsized from the current plan might be doable. It’s time to recognize that Fort Trumbull is where the museum should go and stop talking about $20 million on a bridge to nowhere. New London and other poor cities in Connecticut can find better uses for that money. Who knows, a museum could be an attractive feature of a new neighborhood on the Fort Trumbull peninsula.
