    Somers a tireless advocate

Plainfield Renewable Energy is a local asset, making renewable energy and jumpstarting a new wood waste processing industry in Connecticut. The biomass electricity plant makes enough renewable energy to power approximately 27,000 homes. It is the primary outlet to manage the approximately 300,000 tons of discarded wood generated in Connecticut each year. It does so by using the best available technology, which reduces significantly the emissions compared to traditional facilities. It has stringent protocols approved by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Upon taking office in 2017, Sen. Heather Somers came to learn about what we do and the various operational and market risks the plant faces. She was noticeably attentive to our operations and future viability, asking demonstrating a quick understanding of electricity markets. Upon learning about current market risks, Sen. Somers began advocating for the plant’s eligibility to bid in the state’s renewable energy procurement opportunities. Her advocacy resulted in a new opportunity for the plant to sell its uncontracted energy to the utilities.

Sen. Somers has been a tireless advocate for Plainfield, the renewable energy the plant produces and the role it plays in managing the state’s waste stream.
