    Academic scorecard suggests NFA troubles

It was upsetting but not surprising to read the February 1, 2020 report released by the Connecticut Education Department. The Norwich Free Academy's major decrease of 4.1 points should not be considered slight, as described by Spokesman Mike O'Farrell. The loss of 4.1 points in the index drops the NFA score to significantly below average in the state ranking for the first time in many years. Perhaps this drop is due to the placement of a most capable curriculum director, Denise Grant, and Physical Education Department head, Susan Hopkins-Terrell, on paid administrative leave for a period of seven months (no reason given.)

A curriculum director has been proven to be an integral part of any school administrative structure. Apparently, the head of school and the NFA Board of Trustees do not agree with this logic. This outside evaluation of indicators by the state, together with other recent negative happenings, should serve as a wake-up call that the internal workings of NFA are not as rosy as a ride by-look see" at the beautiful campus would portray.
