Ocean Beach Park should remain open

I disagree with Bev Steinman’s recommendation to close New London’s Ocean Beach Park, in her March 26 Letter to the Editor, “Close those beaches.” Based on a multitude of recent visits, it’s been my experience that guests have been vigilant about following the social distancing guidelines that are posted throughout the park. It’s sad but understandable that the playground is closed since it’s impossible to keep it sterilized. Did Steinman try a sometimes-needed polite reminder of the guidelines to the parents of those “frolicking” kids or anyone else? I’m sorry she had a bad experience, but a recommendation to close Ocean Beach Park based on that lone visit is a bit hasty.

Ocean Beach Park is providing a much-needed outlet for the local population who are sheltering-in-place. It has nothing to do with tourism as Steinman suggested, since there is no tourism at this time. Steinman could try some of the other alternatives listed in the March 27 Daybreak section of The Day, “Five less-Traveled New London County hiking trails” and “Fresh air: A few more outdoor locations to enjoy.” Leave Ocean Beach Park to those of us who are following the guidelines and enjoying our time outside at Ocean Beach Park.
