Some trample nature, not show love of it

In response to Claudia Weicker’s editorial “For the love of nature," (June 9), I totally agree — many have found solace in the outdoors, especially in the Eastern Point area of Groton. It is a special place with a beautiful beach, great walking sidewalks, Shennecossett golf course and the Avery Point campus.

Unfortunately, many folks abuse the area, throwing trash (remnants of COVID-19 such as masks and gloves), walking dogs in our yards allowing them to defecate, leaving used dog poop bags on sidewalks, and littering the marsh. Plastic and cigarette butts are strewn everywhere.

Two examples that vividly demonstrate my frustration; my husband noticed a woman walking her dog on Eastern Point Beach and approached her assuming she was unaware of the no dog policy on sand and water edge (state statute). She turned to him, told him to “shut-up” and proceeded to continue her cell phone conversation. Just when I thought we had seen it all — this week we noticed that someone had dug up one of the 18 beautiful climbing roses that adorn the fence along the perimeter of EP beach, leaving a white cross in its place!

So yes, as Ms. Weicker states, “Now that we have re-discovered these special places, let us care for them”. Please do!
