Those who backed Trump should now reflect on doing so
I applaud the East Lyme Republican Town Committee for forcefully stating what many of us instinctively knew was an insurrection at the nation’s Capitol. We need to understand the root of what happened and why so many voted for this defective, damaged person for our leader. None of this can happen before the people who attacked our nation and tried to subvert our election have been brought to justice.
As much as I respect the town committee for their statement, I also understand many of them voted for President Trump in 2016, putting him in the position to commit the crimes of last week. Trump voters need to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves if they were putting party over country. Trump has not changed. He has always been the star of his “snake” fable. He is and always has been the snake.
The election of Trump has left a once proud party with no moral authority and a loss of identity. It would be a good start if more Republican town committees would follow the lead of East Lyme, but judging from some of the comments in the article, that may be an unreasonable expectation.
