Only one candidate is qualified for City of Groton mayor: Keith Hedrick
Democrats in the City of Groton will soon select their candidate for mayor. The city mayor is not only a political position but also a full-time managerial position, akin to a city manager. Voters need to consider not only each candidate’s vision, but the qualifications needed to manage the city. Legislative experience is not enough. There is a vast difference between voting on policy and being responsible for implementing policy within the city’s resources and the taxpayers’ dollars. There is a vast difference between approving a budget and being the person responsible for crafting a budget and delivering services within that budget.
No municipality or business would hire a manager without considering that person’s managerial qualifications. The mayor needs to supervise and evaluate department heads, negotiate employee contracts, address daily administrative issues while still remaining responsive to the needs of the citizens.
Age should certainly not be a consideration in this election, but the qualifications needed to carry out the job effectively, with fiscal responsibility, and in the city’s best interests, should be of primary importance. There is only one candidate with the vision and qualifications needed − Mayor Keith Hedrick.
