Why was child on Chicago streets?

    Adam Toledo death

I heard about the tragic death of Adam Toledo via the front-page story in The Day, "Chicago police critics call for charges in shooting of boy who dropped handgun," (April 17). As I read the story, the first thing that crossed my mind was, “What was a 13 or 14-year-old boy doing in the middle of the night in an alley in the Chicago area? Where was his father or mother?”

Apparently, no reporter asked these questions for that story or, if asked, did not report any answer. Seems like an important question.

Tragic death, yes. Who or what is initially at fault? A gun or lack of parental control?

Editor's note: Adam's mother reported to police prior to the shooting that he had runaway and was missing.
