    Acquiescence, not bipartisanship

At the recent Ledyard Town Council meeting, the controlling hand of council Chair Linda Davis was seen. Before the vote on appointing Nicole Cruz-Glacken, Chair Davis stated that the nominee would be a disruptive influence on the bipartisanship that she claims the council has achieved. The council voted 7-1 not to appoint Nicole.

The council has not achieved bipartisanship. What they have is acquiescence. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, bipartisanship is defined as “agreement or cooperation between two political parties that usually oppose each other's policies,” and acquiescence is defined as “the reluctant acceptance of something without protest.” Bipartisanship is messy and uncomfortable. The slogan that council Chair Davis coined, “I love Ledyard,” should not mean avoiding the issues and concerns in our town. Instead, it should mean that you want to work even harder to ensure that Ledyard is a town for all.

Nicole Cruz-Glacken was willing to do that work. The other six acquiescent councilors are fearful of disagreeing. Those are not the leaders I want to make decisions in my town, how about you? Election day is November 2, 2021. Do not forget this act of authoritarianism.
