Rather than block progress, Christians improved world in wondrous ways

James Haught's commentary, “Conservatives have always looked to stop social progress,” (July 25), is guilty of selecting which parts of history he wants to discuss and which way he interprets those events. The arc of history is not always bent toward justice. Without belief in God, we would not have many benefits in society. Hospitals and universities started in institutions filled with religious "fanatics." Slavery has existed legally for millenia. But it wasn't until conservative Christians got involved that it was eventually made illegal. (Outside of the U.S. slavery is still rampant among non-believers at nearly 27,000,000).

Kings claimed God's blessing, but our forefathers built our Constitution on our inalienable rights given by God. Meanwhile, the so-called liberal freedom of pornography has caused murder, rape, child molestation and ruined marriages. Liberal abortion has stopped over 60 million heartbeats. Where is the justice for those babies? Liberal lotteries, casinos, liquor clubs and other sins ruin homes. Children go hungry while parents waste money.

Furthermore, Haught ignores the countless millions who have given their life to God and turned from sin. It is not magic. It is Faith. To us it is supernatural, but for God it is natural.
