Conn College should ban legacy admissons on its own

Regarding the editorial, “The appearance of solving a problem,” (Feb. 25).

The absurd excuses put forth by the president of Connecticut College, Katherine Bergeron, with respect to her opposition to “legacy admissions” are reprehensible. Bergeron claims that only 147 of 8,900 applicants to the college have relatives who are alumni. That claim is egregiously misleading, as the real question the Connecticut legislature should seek to have answered is, “How many of those who have been admitted have relatives who are alumni?”

In further stating her opposition to legacy admissions, Bergeron claims “grave concerns” over enforcement of the bill. But why is enforcement necessary? Does Connecticut College, which is otherwise presumably compliant with our laws, need oversight by law enforcement to act in accordance with a law prohibiting legacy admissions?
