    Constitution's wording convoluted, accurate

The author of the letter to the editor titled "Constitution fuzzy on who can run," published March 29, wrote: "The Constitution, Article I, Section 3, states: 'No person shall be a senator who shall not have attained the age of thirty years and been nine years a citizen of the United States and who shall not, when elected, be an inhabitant of that state for which he shall be chosen.' My question is, does that mean the elected senator shall not live in Connecticut?"

This sentence's structure is somewhat convoluted as it is a double negative. It actually means that the elected senator shall live in Connecticut. Remove both negative terms and it reads that, a "person shall be a senator ... who shall, when elected, be an inhabitant of that state for which he shall be chosen."
