Giving Thanks for Greening of Guilford

The Guilford Garden Club would like to sincerely thank all those responsible for helping to make its five-year plan, The Greening of Guilford tree planting program, such a great success. This was truly a joint community effort of the garden club, businesses, organizations, individuals, and memorial donations that made it all possible.

The businesses and organizations that contributed were: The Guilford Garden Club; Bartlett Trees; Car Care Clinic; Connex Credit Union; Elgart Pinn Gordon & Elgart, Optometrists; the Guilford Foundation; X Guilford Preservation Alliance; the Rotary Club of Guilford; the Guilford Savings Bank; Hawley Lincoln Memorial; Land Rover of Guilford; Leisure Markets Travel; Mix Design Store; NewAlliance Bank; Palumbo's Automotive Unlimited; Pasta Avest; Ram Technologies; The Purple Bear; Walmart; and Wilber & King Nurseries. We thank the wonderful individuals who donated and the families who remembered their loved ones with contributions.

We are also grateful to Town Tree Warden Kevin Magee for his support and for the selection of appropriate trees and planting sites. We thank Pam Johnson and the staff of the Guilford Courier for their excellent coverage of our program.

A variety of 45 trees were planted in the first four years in different locations in the town. This year, because of Hurricane Irene and a subsequent snowstorm, planting has been deferred until the spring. Approximately 10 trees will be planted in the spring, bringing the total to 55 trees for the five-year plan.

Because of the obvious need to maintain our tree canopy in the town through replacing and planting new trees, the Guilford Garden Club recently elected to establish a permanent Tree Fund.
