Why did church protect priests and not the kids?

I am writing in reference to the article, "New London priest abuse case readies for trial," Aug. 8.
I am appalled and angry to read another story about the Catholic church and the priests. Reading the article tells how Rev. Thomas Shea was assigned to parish after parish after assaulting numerous girls. Why were all the assault cases always swept under the rug instead of a zero tolerance policy which is now in effect? Were the children ever the main focus or was the prime objective to hide everything? Police were never notified. Are priests exempt? Maybe if these priests were taken care of years ago there would be less than half the victims and half the monetary settlements.
Is honesty not the policy here?
