    The Sum Total

Last June, the Courier published a letter written by me concerning the remarks given by Sean Scanlon following his nomination to run in the 98th House District ["Pay Very Close Attention," June 26]. In that letter, I questioned the veracity of many of the statements Mr. Scanlon made in his acceptance speech. I concluded by stating that his campaign bears close watching in the months ahead for claims of either inflated or nonexistent accomplishments.

After reading most of the letters published in the Courier over the past few months, it is apparent that such concerns were well founded. Despite his supporter's claims to the contrary, in no way was Mr. Scanlon a leader in the high school project, nor did he make any meaningful contribution to the effort to bring about an all-day kindergarten.

Mr. Scanlon's record of public service in Guilford consists of a one-year stint on the Economic Development Commission. He resigned that position two years ago when he went to work as a salaried outreach person for U.S. Senator Chris Murphy. That is the sum total of Mr. Scanlon's record of public service.

In stark contrast to Mr. Scanlon, his opponent, Cynthia Cartier, has a record of public service and accomplishment in Guilford going back well over a decade. This record had been thoroughly documented by others in recent weeks and it not necessary for me to repeat what has been already been published in the Courier.

There should be no doubt that the person best qualified to represent the voters of the 98th District is Cynthia Cartier. I encourage your readers to give her their support on Nov. 4.
