    Groton needs more fiscal prudence

This is in response to Shelley Gardner’s letter, “RTM social club is killing Groton,” (Jan 16).

As newly elected fkoor leader for the majority this year, I have a somewhat different perspective from Ms. Gardner when she criticizes the Groton RTM members. Our RTM passes on the budget the Town Council sends to us.

This last election saw many of our more generous members lose their seats. I believe this is a reflection of residents wanting more fiscal prudence. In my discussions with Town Council members, I have asked them, as our policy-making body, to lead in exercising fiscal prudence. I believe we would support them. Yes, it is difficult to do with less. But there are smart ways to make it happen if the will is there.

Should the RTM be replaced, as Ms. Gardner suggests, with a voter approval of the budget? Many of us would agree and we may get there yet. An RTM is an anomaly in Connecticut. I know we are all busy, but please consider contacting your area representative about your wishes. Our e-mail addresses and telephone numbers are listed on the Town website. Budget deliberations begin in earnest in April. Let us know your thoughts.
