Want to reduce gun crimes? Start enforcing gun laws.

The Day has the perfect opportunity to show readers the problem with how gun crimes are handled in our courts today. This newspaper reported a 20-year-old Norwich man was arrested for what police believe was a targeted attack against an intended victim. The only reason the victim was not injured was due to the lack of marksmanship by the shooter. I urge the Day to follow up with a report on the eventual outcome of the charges brought before the court after the shooter's lawyer has plea bargained to a lesser charge. I believe the real problem is not more feel-good gun laws that only effect law-abiding gun owners, rather our elected legislators should insist on having the courts enforce the existing laws to punish those that refuse to abide by them.

Instead of proposing legislation holding gun manufacturers financially responsible for incidents beyond their control, perhaps a better way to prevent gun deaths would be to hold the courts and lawyers financially responsible for damages caused by the criminals they keep releasing into society on plea bargains! How many times do we read an article of a murder or assault, then find the perpetrator had multiple gun arrests in the recent past that were not prosecuted?
