    Ban assault weapons

As a registered Republican, I would like to respond to Andrew Olearnick’s article in The Day, “Murphy doesn’t support Cruz bill,” (Sept. 20). The Cruz bill is almost identical to what our Republican senators were promulgating when the Democrats were trying to change gun laws after the school shooting in Texas. The Democrats are taking credit for changing some gun laws, but the changes made had no impact on the NRA or making our schools and citizens safer.

Our country did have an assault weapon ban for a few years and there were less massacres in that period (a fact, look it up). Our U.S. Congress let the ban expire many years ago. After the AWB expired this country has had numerous massacres which includes at least three public schools.

I do not believe Senator Cruz’s bill will stop massacres at our schools.

I believe in the Second Amendment, and it was put there because this country had no military. We as citizens have the right to bear arms (pistols, rifles, and shot guns).

If we really want to make our schools and citizens safer, the answer is ban assault weapons to the public.
