    College roundup: Bears have nine-game streak snapped in NEWMAC volleyball semifinals

    Springfield, Mass. - Third-seeded Wellesley knocked off second-seeded Coast Guard Academy 3-1 Saturday in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference volleyball tournament semifinals held at Springfield College. Game scores were 24-26, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-19.

    The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Bears (23-6), who will find out Monday if they will receive a berth in the ECAC New England Division III tournament. Coast Guard swept the regular season matches against Wellesley (23-8).

    Catherine Walker lead the Bears with 17 kills and 15 digs and Keriann Mason added 10 kills and a team-high 20 digs, while Karen Matic had 10 kills and a team-high 26 assists.

    Women's cross country

    • Conn College placed 22nd out of 47 teams at the ECAC Division III Championship at Mount Greylock High School in Williamstown, Mass. Middlebury won the team title with 25 points. Senior Libby Maret led the Camels, finishing 75th in 25 minutes, 32 seconds. Anna Curtis-Heald took 114th in 26:37 and Grace Glynn was 140th in 27:11.

    • Freshman Kendall Auth was Coast Guard's top runner, as she placed 43rd in 24:50 at the ECAC Division III Championship. The Bears placed 14th out of 40 teams. Sophomore Moira McNeil was 88th and Tess Swiecanski 89th in 25:59 while Kathryn Peck took 101st in 26:14.

    Men's cross country

    • Senior Brenner Green, a Norwich Free Academy graduate, was Conn College's top finisher at the ECAC Division III Championship, finishing 54th in 28:05 on the 8k course. The Camels placed 18th out of 51 teams. Williams won the team title with 44 points and New England College sophomore Antoine Gisore was the individual champion, finishing in 26:10. Andrew Majkut was 83rd for the Camels, crossing the line in 28:42 while teammate Michael Joyce took 90th in 28:54.

    • Four Coast Guard runners placed in the top 100, as the Bears finished 16th out of 44 teams at the ECAC Division III Championships. Senior Devin Quinn was 66th in 28:22 while freshman Joe O'Connell took 88th in 28:49, sophomore Brad Pienta was 90th in 28:53 and freshman Brian Mussard was 97th in 28:58.

    Men's swimming

    • Marco Tinari, Johnson Knox and Derrian Duryea each won two events, leading Coast Guard past SUNY-New Paltz 169-88 in a season-opening meet. Tinari took first in the 500 freestyle (4:58.23) and 1,000 freestyle (10:19.79) while Knox won the 50 freestyle (21.69) and 100 freestyle (48.44) and Duryea finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.94) and 200 breaststroke (2:19.03). Other Coast Guard winners: Kevin Smit, 200 freestyle, 1:48.46; Ryan Buy, 100 butterfly, 55.97; and Tim Early, 200 butterfly, 2:03.58.
