College roundup: Buzzer-beater by Ford lifts Mariners to victory
New London - Joshua Ford made a layup at the buzzer to give Mitchell College a 59-57 victory over Regis College on Saturday in a New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball game at the Yarnell Athletic Center.
With 3.7 seconds left, Alex Vess inbounded the ball to Enoch Contreras, who threw a bounce pass to a Ford as he was cutting to the basket.
Ford finished with 18 points and seven rebounds for the Mariners (4-5, 2-1) while Paul Jefferson scored a game-high 21 points (he made five 3-pointers).
In other games:
• Amherst College pulled away in the second half for a 74-62 victory over Connecticut College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Amherst (12-1, 2-0) led just 39-37 at the break, but outscored the Camels 35-25 in the final 20 minutes. Matt Vadas scored 21 points for Conn (5-8, 0-2) while Rob Harrigan and Boris Jeremic added 11 apiece.
• Jevon Williams scored 30 points to lead UConn-Avery Point to a 59-55 win over Northern Essex Community College. Josh Bowyer scored 14 for Avery Point (2-7).
Women's basketball
• Freshman Jamie Waterman had a career-high 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds and Coast Guard used a 10-0 second-half run to hold off WPI 55-54 in the NEWMAC. Another freshman, Alexi Howland, added 10 points for the Bears (5-5, 1-5), who snapped a five-game losing streak.
• Unbeaten Amherst held Conn College to just 22.6 percent shooting, led 44-15 at the half and rolled to a 93-42 NESCAC victory over the Camels. Jenn Shinall and Tara Gabelman scored 11 points apiece for Conn (10-2, 1-1). Amherst is 12-0, 2-0.
• Chelsea Joubert scored a career-high 27 points as Becker defeated Mitchell 72-53 in the NECC. Zilka Navarro led the Mariners (1-8, 0-3) with 18 points, while Sheanna James added 15 points and seven rebounds and Bianca Young had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Women's hockey
• Senior captain Molly Murphy had two goals and an assist to lead Conn College past Bowdoin 4-2 in a NESCAC game at Dayton Arena. The Camels (4-5-1, 2-4) got off to a quick start courtesy of Courtney Dumont, who scored just 1:10 into the game. Ariel DiPasquale also scored for Conn and goalie Kelsie Fralick stopped 32 shots.
Men's hockey
• Mike Sinsigalli scored a pair or goals and Andrew Margolin had his first career shutout as Conn College beat Western New England 2-0. Julien Boutet assisted on both goals and Margolin made 29 saves for the Camels (4-7-1).
