Stonington tallying up cost of last week's flooding

Stonington - Officials here on Monday were still assessing the damage and totalling up the cost of last week's flooding.

First Selectman Ed Haberek said he was preparing to send a letter to state and federal officials seeking financial assistance for those who suffered losses.

Numerous homes and businesses were flooded and about 50 cars were damaged when they were engulfed in flood waters at the Mystic Aquarium's parking lot. Many roads and driveways need to be repaired and a piece of the town's phone system had to be replaced.

Haberek said some of the worst road damage occurred on Flanders, Collins and Jerry Browne roads. He said the town is also trying to address the water on Meadow Avenue that has not receded. It is also looking at how to prevent future problems.

Haberek said he would have a better estimate today of the cost to the town so far. He said police overtime alone totaled $5,387 and extra pay for highway department workers is expected to eclipse that. In addition, the town had to bring in specialized equipment to try and clear the flooding. The cost to repair roads, though, is expected to dwarf the overtime pay.

The town has also sent an e-mail to businesses asking them to fill out a Storm Damage Form from the Connecticut Department of Homeland Security. The form is used to document any damage that occurred from the flood and is used to determine assistance to businesses.

Haberek is asking that copies of the completed form, which he attached to the e-mail, be sent to his office and faxed to (860) 257-4621 or e-mailed (Thomas.gavaghan@ct.gov) to the State of Connecticut. Haberek can be reached at 535-5050 or Selectmen@Stonington-ct.gov.

Forms are available on the town Web site at www.stonington-ct.gov.

Haberek said he is also asking homeowners to fill out the Storm Damage Survey Form for Homeowners which is available on the town Web site and in the First Selectman's Office.

Homeowners are asked to provide a copy of accompanying material, including pictures or additional costs or repairs that were incurred.

The forms will be compiled and sent to the state as a request for aid.
