    Eliot Middle School Students Honored by McDonald's and CAS as Top Scholar Leaders

    John Winthrop Middle School students Grace Carver and Paul Myers were recognized as top Scholar Leaders at the 2009 Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) Scholar Leader Banquet sponsored by the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts McDonald's Owner/Operator Association. McDonald's owner/operators joined CAS to honor these students, who are among the best of the best in the state.

    Wilkes and Benincosa Named to Spring 2009 Honor Roll

    Senior Garrett Wilkes of Essex earned high honors and junior William Benincosa of Ivoryton earned honors for the spring 2009 term at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor.

    Jorgensen Named to Spring Term Deans' List at Choate Rosemary Hall

    Olivia Jorgensen, daughter of Dr. William L. Jorgensen and Dr. Erin D. Jorgensen of Deep River has been named to the spring term 2009 dean's list at Choate Rosemary Hall.

    King's Work to Appear in Literary Magazine

    "One Week," a work of prose by Mitchell King of Essex has been selected for publication in the 2009 edition of The Apprentice Writer literary magazine. Created by Gary Fincke, professor of English and creative writing and director of the Writers' Institute at Susquehanna University, The Apprentice Writer publishes poems, stories, personal essays, photographs, and artwork by high school students from 16 states. Approximately 70 works are chosen from more than 5,000 submissions. King is the son of Thad and Cathy King. He is a sophomore at Valley Regional High School and a student of Margaret Meeha.

    Baylis Makes Dean's List at Quinnipiac University

    Kate Baylis of Essex has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at Quinnipiac University.

    Vicino Participates in Central CT Writing Project

    Allison Vicino, a teacher in the Deep River School District, is participating in the Central Connecticut Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute, a part of the National Writing Project (NWP). Starting in April, participants in this program have been sharing best practice demonstration lessons, writing personal and professional papers for publication, responding to current literature about writing, and conferencing with colleagues to improve writing.     Chester Student Makes Honor Roll at IDS

    Zach Pugliares of Chester, a sixth grade student at The Independent Day School in Middlefield, earned honors for the third trimester at IDS.

    Amanda Waite Lund Earns PhD from RTI

    Amanda Waite Lund, daughter of Theodore and Molly Lund of Chester, has graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree in biology. She is currently employed by Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland, where she is investigating the way tumor cells interact with the lymphatic system.

    Abygale Williamson Lund Earns BA from UConn

    Abygale Williamson Lund, daughter of Theodore and Molly Lund of Chester, has graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BA in music. She will attend St. Thomas University this fall to pursue a master's degree in intercultural human rights law.

    Deep River Student Named to Dean's List at Ithaca College

    Amanda Riggio, daughter of Deep River residents Paul and Vannessa Riggio, was named to the dean's list at Ithaca College's Roy H. Park School of Communications for the spring 2009 term with a GPA of 3.7.

    Ribchinsky Named to Dean's List at Roger Williams University

    Leah Ribchinsky of Ivoryton, a student at Roger Williams University, has made the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester. Leah play number one singles/doubles on the tennis team and was also a National Scholar-Athlete Award winner.

    Local Students Receive Scholarship Awards from Center for Disability Rights

    Benjamin Kaufman of Essex and Justin J. Kruscek of Deep River were among 11 local students with disabilities to receive scholarship awards at the Center for Disability Rights' (CDR) Annual Meeting on July 30 at Savin Rock Conference Center in West Haven. To be eligible for a CDR scholarship, all the successful candidates must submit a person essay, proof of their disability and residency, and be enrolled or accepted at a post-secondary institution.
