Spera to be sworn in as chief tonight in Old Saybrook

Old Saybrook - The Old Saybrook Police Department may be swearing in a new chief today, but those in town have known incoming Chief Michael A. Spera for a long time.

Raised in town since he was 4, Spera, who is currently the town's deputy police chief, replaces retired longtime Chief Edmund H. Mosca. Spera, 34, has been serving the town since he was 15, when he became the state's youngest EMT. He joined the police department as a part-time dispatcher at age 18 and was promoted from patrolman to lieutenant in 2004.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at the Old Saybrook High School auditorium. The event is open to the public and will include a display of antique police cars in the parking lot.
