    Schools Open for Students, Finally

"We're glad that we finally opened after last week's power outage. It was a smooth opening across all five schools, and we are looking forward to a wonderful and productive school year for all," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ruth Levy said Sept. 7, the opening day of the 2011-2012 school year, an opening day delayed by a tropical storm named Irene.

While thousands of Chester, Deep River and Essex residents struggled with power outages as a result of the storm, John Winthrop Middle School became the Red Cross Emergency Shelter for the towns. Through nine days, the district staff, augmented by other volunteers, offered a friendly and safe environment, potable water, hot showers and hot meals to hundreds.

On the first day, schools opened their doors to students, returning teachers and staff, and new hires. There are new hires at four of the district's five schools.
