Conservation of Darrow Pond to be celebrated

East Lyme —  A celebration to commemorate the conservation of the 301-acre Darrow Pond property will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the property, at 16 Mostowy Road.

The event will include tours of the property led by Art Carlson and remarks by Alicia Betty of The Trust for Public Land, Jack Hogan and Beth Groeber of the Darrow Pond Open Space Committee, First Selectman Paul Formica and Chris Martin of Webster Bank. The Trust for Public Land completed the purchase once it was approved by voters.

The property, which includes Smith Hill and scenic views of the pond, is open for passive recreation. At one time slated to become an 18-hole golf course and country club, then a 600-unit active adult community, Webster Bank took title to the property in December 2008 and supported the conservation of the property
