Thames River Basin Partnership to hold workshop

The Thames River Basin Partnership will host its 12th annual floating workshop from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday with events celebrating the cleanup of the Willimantic River and the 40th anniversary of the federal Clean Water Act.

Registration will be at the Eagleville Fire Department, 879 Stafford Road, Mansfield. The keynote speaker will be Hugo Thomas, former chairman of the Willimantic Task Force. After his talk, workshop participants will visit the Eagleville Dam for a view of Eagleville Brook. The group will then visit River Park for more short talks. An easy flatwater paddle on Eagleville Lake will begin at this location. Paddlers should bring their own boats and life preservers. A hike along the Willimantic River Greenway is being offered as an alternative activity.

There will also be an optional morning walking tour of the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs to view several low-impact development stormwater treatment systems.

For information about the walk, contact Eric Thomas, watershed manager for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, at (860) 424-3548 or at Eric.Thomas@CT.gov.

To register for the floating workshop, visit www.thamesriverbasinpartnership.org. The registration cost is $25.

The partnership brings together towns, governmental and private conservation organizations in the Thames River watershed, extending from the Massachusetts border to Long Island Sound.
