Ledyard – Everbridge Community Alerts, the town’s emergency alert system, is up and running.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for the system which notifies of community emergencies, missing persons, road closures and more.

“If there was a large scale emergency, we can utilize the 911 database, but there’s a problem with limitations on the definition of what an emergency is, so we purchased to software that allows us to make community notifications for closures and missing persons,” police Lt. Michael Finkelstein said Thursday. “All we have are the White Pages listings and not a lot of people have a home phone anymore so now we can reach them through e-mail, phone and text message.”
