    Portuguese Holy Ghost Society to hold weekend celebration

    Stonington — The annual Portuguese Holy Ghost Society celebration will be held Saturday and Sunday in the borough.

    The schedule of events is as follows:

    On Saturday at 6 p.m. The Westerly Band will lead a procession from the Portuguese club to St. Mary Church to pick up the symbolic crown and scepter before returning through the streets of the Borough, particularly through the area “south of the cannons” where Portuguese settlers who began the feast lived during most of the 20th century.

    From 6:45 to 11 p.m., the FAITH Portuguese Band from New Bedford, Mass will play at the club. Portuguese sweetbread and other specialties will be auctioned off.

    On Sunday, at 10 a.m., there will be a street procession from the club to St. Mary Church for the traditional blessing of the crowns and scepters at the 10:30 Mass, which will be held in memory of deceased members of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society.

    After Mass, about 11:30 a.m., the procession will circuit the borough and return to the club. At 12:30 p.m., the symbolic “feeding of the masses” with soup and roasted meats will begin. The meal is free. Throughout the afternoon the Mystic Horns will play and their will be an auction of sweetbread, seafood, traditional sweets and crafts.

    At 6 p.m., members of the club will draw names for the hosts of the seven domingas and the sponsor of the 2012 feast.

    Throughout the weekend, concession stands will provide Portuguese and American food and drinks.
