Cutler withdraws as candidate for 43rd House District

It appears Democratic state Rep. Diana Urban of North Stonington will run unopposed for her seventh term in the 43rd House District in November.

Republican William Cutler of Mystic said today that he sent a letter to the secretary of the state’s office last week asking to have his name withdrawn from the ballot for the Nov. 6 election. The 43rd District is comprised of Stonington and North Stonington.

Cutler said there were a number of reasons for his withdrawal from the race, but he declined to detail them. Republican officials said the decision was for personal and family reasons.

At the 43rd District Republican caucus this summer, the party did not have a candidate until Cutler stepped forward. Two years ago, Urban defeated Cutler 5,914-3,112.

Stonington Republican Town Committee Chairman Dudley Wheeler said this afternoon that while there is still time to put forth a replacement candidate, no one has shown interest at this time.

“We still have a chance to put forth a candidate, but it will be tough,” he said.

Wheeler said one of the problems is that the position requires a lot of time and travel for part-time pay.
