Ledyard council adopts Route 12 streetscape improvement plan

Ledyard — The Ledyard Town Council adopted a plan for streetscape improvements along Route 12 in Gales Ferry Wednesday night.

The action authorizes Mayor John Rodolico to apply for funding from the state’s Main Street Investment Fund program, which has a Sept. 28 deadline.

The Town Council hired Mystic-based firm Kent+Frost Landscape Architecture to develop the long-awaited rehabilitation plan for the corridor.

Although the grant has a $500,000 cap, the full improvement plan carries an estimated $2 million price tag, Planning Commission Chair Mike Cherry said. The Economic Development Commission, on which Cherry also serves, met earlier to make a center section of the corridor, from the intersection of Military Highway and Route 12 south to the intersection at Christy Hill Road, a top priority for funding.

The plan will be presented in its entirety in the application, Cherry said, with the hope that the town can apply for more grants for further improvements in the future.

The Economic Development Commission will host an information session and workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday at the former Gales Ferry School to gain insight from residents. Information about the plan is available on the town’s website.
