Diesel fuel spill closes Route 117 in Ledyard for hours

Gales Ferry firefighters spread granular oil absorbent on the road as they respond to the scene of a diesel spill on Route 117, just north of Sandy Hollow Road in Ledyard Wednesday, October 10, 2012. An estimated 200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway from the saddle tanks on a tractor-trailer. The road was closed for over three hours while the spill was cleaned-up. Groton Utilities, the state DEEP, Sub Base Fire Department and Old Mystic Fire Departments also responded to the scene.
Ledyard — Route 117 in the area of Sandy Hollow Road and Lake Street was reopened Wednesday evening after a tractor-trailer spilling diesel fuel closed the road for several hours.
The saddle tanks of an 18-wheeler were damaged, spilling about 200 gallons of fuel. The spill was just north of Sandy Hollow Road.
Ledyard, Gales Ferry and Old Mystic fire departments responded to the scene. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Submarine Base Hazmat team also responded.
Sand trucks were also called in to help make the roadway less slick.
