Downed trees, power lines causing problems in North Stonington

First Selectman Nick Mullane said there are 18 roads in town that are not passable due to either downed trees, power lines or both.

Mullane said trees have fallen on several houses in town and have taken out electrical wires.

Highway crews and fire department personnel are waiting for the strong winds to subside before going back out to clear roads, with the goal of at least allowing for one-way traffic.

“If the weather gets better, we’ll go back out there,” Mullane said. “It’s limited what we can do right now with the wind.”

Mullane said at the very least, crews will be back out to clear the roads first thing tomorrow morning. Residents are asked to stay inside and off the roads.

As of about 8 p.m., 1,350 customers in town are without power, according to the CL&P outage map.
