East Lyme — Town and school officials are planning several school security initiatives, which Superintendent of Schools James Lombardo announced at Monday’s Board of Education meeting.

The schools’ security director and other staff are completing an audit on the district’s security needs and will present it to the superintendent Friday. Administrators will discuss the audit and priorities for implementing security initiatives before presenting the results at the March 11 school board meeting.

Capital funds or money from the current year’s school budget could potentially be used to purchase some security items identified in the audit, according to Lombardo.

The school board is proposing that town officials include approximately $100,000 for school security measures in the town’s capital plan, subject to town approval, said Lombardo.

In addition, the district will host a second school-safety forum for the community on March 20. The first forum was held in December.

Besides the district’s initiatives, town personnel, including from the emergency management department, will hold an emergency drill at the high school on Feb. 19, a day when students are not at school, said Lombardo. He said residents should not be alarmed if they notice emergency personnel outside the school during the drill.
