Suspect at Large in Shaken Baby Case

    Keith Loftus

Old Saybrook are searching for Keith Loftus, 31, following “a lengthy and intensive investigation” of “shaken baby syndrome” involving a then-seven month old Old Saybrook infant who sustained serious injuries.

The infant’s mother, Crystal Dorothy, 26, of Old Saybrook, was arrested on Feb. 19 and charged with risk of injury to a minor, providing a false statement in the second degree and conspiracy to commit false statement in the second degree, interfering with an officer and conspiracy to commit interfering with an officer. Bond was set at $100,000; she was presented in Middletown Superior Court today.

Police say Loftus, Dorothy’s boyfriend, was a caretaker of the infant while Dorothy worked. The investigation, which began Sept. 16, 2012, when Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital alerted the Department of Children and Families about an infant with injuries they suspected were consistent with abuse, determined the infant’s injuries occurred over a multi-day period in September 2012, both in Old Saybrook and Deep River, while the infant was under Loftus’s care.

Police stated the infant, now just over a year old, survived the life threatening injuries and is residing in special foster care.

The investigation determined both Loftus and Dorothy fabricated a story about how the infant’s injuries occurred. Their fabrication was not consistent with the life threatening injuries the infant sustained.

Agencies involved in the investigation included the Department of Children and Families, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, the Connecticut State Police, and the Middletown Superior Court. Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael A. Spera credited his department’s investigative unit and the multi-agency cooperation for bringing the case to a conclusion.

“Our department will always be vigilant to protect the rights of those that can’t protect themselves,” Spera stated.

Police are asking for help locating Loftus. His last known address was in Deep River, but he is known to be in the Middletown, Essex, or Old Saybrook area. He is wanted on charges of assault in the first degree, risk of injury to a minor, interfering with an officer, conspiracy to commit interfering with an officer and conspiracy to commit false statement. Loftus is facing a $150,000 bond.

In 2011, Loftus, then of 396 Boston Post Road, East Lyme, was charged in Chester with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, risk of injury to a minor and interfering with an officer.

Those with information regarding Loftus's location should contact the Old Saybrook Police Department at 860-395-3142.
