The state Department of Public Health has asked Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for more information on changes to its outpatient psychiatry, AIDS and OB/GYN clinics, as part of its review of whether the changes require approval of state regulators.

In letters sent Feb. 14 and Wednesday, Karen Roberts, principal health care analyst at the state health department, asks L+M to provide information about when the hospital stopped being the direct provider of these services and billing was shifted to a hospital subsidiary, Associated Specialists of Southeastern Connecticut. It also asked how patient care has been impacted.

The health department letters are in response to information L+M provided to the state last month about a plan to move outpatient psychiatry services out of the main hospital to the offices of primary care doctors that are part of Lawrence + Memorial Physicians Associates, in Groton, New London, Ledyard and Niantic.

Last fall, L+M moved its OB-GYN clinic out of the main hospital to a office at 470 Bank St. The AIDS clinic has remained in its same location on the first floor of the main hospital, although two staff positions recently were eliminated through layoffs. L+M said there has been no change in the types of care, hours or availability of the services.

L+M spokesman Mike O’Farrell said Thursday that the hospital is working on a response to the state’s latest request.
