State to fund Mystic River dredging

Mystic — The state Bond Commission approved $5.5 million in funding today to dredge shoaled sections of the Mystic River near Mystic Seaport.

In announcing the funding, State Sen. Andrew Maynard, D-18th Dist., State Rep. Diana Urban, D-North Stonington, and State Rep. Elissa Wright, D-Groton, said the project is anticipated to create or retain 116 construction-related jobs.

The funding is part of a larger package of $21 million in bonding for improvements to ports and marinas, including dredging and navigational direction.

“The Mystic River is one of the area’s great natural assets, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike,” Maynard said in a statement. “Home to the Mystic Seaport Museum and numerous marinas, the river is important both for its natural beauty and the commerce it supports. This dredging will allow continued access for all those who enjoy this extraordinary place.”
