New London — A team of five high school students who are members of the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps placed second of 221 northeast teams on a test administered to every NJROTC unit in the country.

Four teams of five NJROTC members from New London High School took the test last month, which Senior Naval Science Instructor CDR Ted Ward, retired U.S. Navy, described on Thursday as the equivalent of a SAT test for the NAVY ROTC.

Science & Technology Magnet High School seniors David Wood, Ryan Dickinson, Liam Greene, Ben Toth and Thomas Glavan now have bragging rights within the high school’s NJROTC, Ward said.

Wood is the only student on the team who lives in Norwich and not in New London.

“They found out about it Wednesday and mentioned it to the classes today and they were pretty excited about it,” Ward said. “They challenged the academic teams in the junior classes to pick up their performance for next year. We have the reputation of being an academic powerhouse within the ROTC so the seniors want to make sure that the juniors that follow them keep up the tradition.”

The test covers all subject matters within the ROTC curriculum, which ranges from basic military knowledge on proper uniform dress and marching to government, geography and naval history. Each member of a team takes their own test but the scores are totaled as a group.

All NJROTC units in the country took the hour-long, 100-question test on March 6.
