Stonington — Borough taxpayers who attend Saturday’s annual borough meeting will be asked to approve a $1,026,446 budget for 2013-14, an increase of $63,859, or 6.6 percent, over the current budget.

But that increase will be more than offset by $68,274 in increased funding from the town. The $221,747 the borough will receive is based on the miles of town roads that the town does not have to maintain because the borough has its own highway department.

The budget calls for a tax rate of 2.5 mills, based on the new revaluation. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at Borough Hall.

The budget would increase funding to the Stonington Free Library, from the current $16,500 to $22,000. The biggest increase is in the special revenue and trust fund account, which would increase from $190,017 to $242,157.

It calls for spending $165,00 to make repairs to Temple, Wall and Broad (east side) streets, a $50,000 deposit to the firetruck replacement fund, $20,000 for the building fund and $7,157 for sidewalk improvements.

Voters will also be asked to approve a five-year Highway Department Capital Improvement Plan. After the $165,000 is spent in 2013-14, the plans calls for spending $150,000 in each of the next four years to make improvements to Gold, Cross and Orchard streets in 2014-15; Front and Diving streets in 2015-16; Pearl, Denison and Cliff (north side) streets in 2016-17; and Church Street east of Main Street in 2017-18.
