Fox found in Groton tests positive for rabies

Groton – A kit fox found near Orchard Lane has tested positive for rabies, the Ledge Light Health District announced today.

The young fox was killed by a neighborhood dog on Wednesday, and Ledge Light took the animal for tests on Thursday, said Ryan McCammon, sanitarian with the public health agency. There was no human contact with the fox, but the dog is under 45-day home confinement as a precaution, he said. The dog was up-to-date on its rabies shot but was given a booster shot.

McCammon said about one fox per year tests positive for rabies in the five-town region covered by Ledge Light. Because the one involved in the Orchard Lane incident was a kit, neighbors have been warned about a rabid mother fox and other kits in the area.

For information, call Ledge Light at (860) 448-4882 or the Groton Animal Control officer at (860) 441-6709.
