Mystic Aquarium to release rescued harp seal in RI

Mystic (AP) — Mystic Aquarium officials say they will release a rescued harp seal on Charlestown Breachway State Beach in Rhode Island.

The 1- to 2-year-old seal will be released at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The seal was rescued in March in South Kingstown, R.I. It was thin, dehydrated and had a puncture wound on a flipper. The seal has recovered after being treated with antibiotics.

Harp seals typically travel from Canada to New England at winter in pursuit of fish and return to colder waters in the spring.

Mystic Aquarium's animal rescue program supports animals in need and educates the public about the marine environment.

The public is encouraged to call the aquarium if they encounter a marine mammal or sea turtle in Connecticut, Rhode Island or Fishers Island, N.Y.
