Officer saves man from burning building in Norwich

Norwich – Norwich Fire Marshal/Chief Kenneth Scandariato said investigators have determined that a fire early Friday morning on North Main Street was accidental and likely caused by an electrical malfunction of some kitchen equipment.

The fire at 56 N. Main St. was first reported by a police officer on patrol in the area. Officer Sean Sullivan noticed smoke coming from the second-floor apartment above a vacant business shortly before 4 a.m.

Sullivan entered the apartment and rescued a 53-year-old man, guiding him out of the smoke-filled home.

Scandariato said firefighters arrived within two minutes of the call and, using tanks of pressurized water, put out the small fire in the kitchen before it could spread. No injuries were reported.
