Waterford — Republicans maintained control of the Board of Education Tuesday, and incumbents Republican Kathleen M. McCarty and Democrat Anne L. Ogden held their seats.

"I really thank the community for coming out to vote," McCarty, who is also chairman of the Republican Town Committee, said.

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Bill Sheehan said he was disappointed with the results.

"I thought we had a good selection of candidates, but the voters didn't," Sheehan said.

Democrat Gregory A. Benoit won a seat on the school board, as did Republican Lisa Marie Barry, though she was ahead of Democrat Jessica McLaughlin by a slim margin, 1,387 votes to 1,373 votes. It was unclear late Tuesday whether there would be a recount.

The new board members will join seated members Republicans Kevin J. Brunelle, David Campo, David Kenney and Jody M. Nazarchyk, and Democrat Sheri Lee Cote. The board has staggered terms, and not all seats were up for election Tuesday.

Republicans also maintained control of the Board of Finance and Representative Town Meeting.

"I think they (voters) are saying that the status quo seems to be OK," Sheehan said.

Twenty percent of Waterford's 2,615 registered voters turned out to vote Tuesday.
