    Selectmen approve $449,989 firetruck bid

Preston – The Board of Selectmen Thursday approved the purchase of a new combination rescue and pumper firetruck for $449,989.

The purchase from Smeal Fire Apparatus was approved in the second round of bidding for the new truck. Town officials rejected the first bid result at the recommendation of a committee of firefighters.

First Selectman Robert Congdon said the truck is expected to arrive in town in about 10 months and will be based at the Preston City Fire Department. The truck will replace a 20-year-old Preston City pumper truck and will allow the town to combine pumper and rescue services on one truck.

Voters approved $450,000 for the firetruck in the five-year capital plan in May.
