Preston residents quickly approve new plow truck and state $5 million demolition grant

Preston — About 15 residents Thursday approved the purchase of a new plow truck to replace a plow truck that broke down during the winter and also formally approved accepting a $5 million state grant awarded in February to continue the demolition of the buildings at the former Norwich Hospital property.

The town had included $270,000 in the five-year capital plan for three plow trucks, but the amount proved insufficient for three trucks. Residents at the special town meeting Thursday approved taking $25,000 from the capital nonrecurring account to supplement funds already approved in the capital budget for the purchase of two plow trucks.

The original budget had included a plan to receive some money for the trade-in for the old truck, but when the engine blew, the truck lost that value.

The state Bond Commission approved a $5 million grant that the Preston Redevelopment Agency plans to use to demolish some of the largest buildings on the main former hospital campus, including the Kettle building — the largest and most visible building.
