GFD Reminds All: Detectors Have Limited Lifespans

We may all know to change the batteries in smoke detectors or carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in our homes, but how about checking on the lifespan of the devices themselves?

It's important for members of the community to know these devices do not last forever and should be replaced, at the very least, every 10 years, said Guilford Assistant Fire Chief/Deputy Fire Marshall Wayne Vetre.

"We want to make the community aware that they should be replacing detection devices as recommended by the manufacturer of the device or, as a general rule of thumb, replace any devices that are 10 years old," said Vetre.

If the age cannot be determined or is otherwise unknown, replacement is the alternative. Consumers should also check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website, www.cpsc.gov, to see if their detectors have been recalled.

Smoke and CO alarms powered by house wiring should have battery back-ups and those batteries should be replaced once a year, or sooner when they make a "chirping" sound. Alarms should also be cleaned following the manufacturer's instructions.

Residents with questions about their devices or those seeking additional information are encouraged to contact Vetre by calling Guilford Fire Department at 203-453-8056.
