Fischer's New London contract extended; meet and greet to be held with new superintendent

New London — The Board of Education has scheduled a “meet and greet” welcoming session with Terrence P. Carter, the school district’s new superintendent, to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Port ‘N Starboard Banquet Hall at Ocean Beach Park.

Meanwhile, Friday, current Superintendent Nicholas A. Fischer said he has agreed to continue in his position for one more month, providing an administrative bridge to the Aug. 1 arrival of Carter.

In 2013, the Board of Education voted not to renew Fischer’s contract, which expires Monday. Under the extension deal, Fischer said he will accept one-twelfth the annual salary the new superintendent receives, which is still under negotiation.

Carter is arriving from Chicago, where he is currently the director and chief academic officer of the Academy for Urban School Leadership, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that works as a division of the city school system to turn around poorly performing schools. Carter has been director and chief academic officer of the academy, which manages 29 Chicago public schools serving more than 17,000 students, since 2010.

A native of Miami, Fla., Carter will relocate from Chicago.
