Meeting set on Old Mystic post office hours

Mystic - The U.S. Postal Service will hold a community meeting on July 30 to discuss the results of a survey that asked customers about slightly decreasing the hours the Old Mystic post office is open or study other options, including closing the post office and offering services in a different way.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. at the post office on Main Street.

The postal service has said it will not make a decision until after the meeting so it can consider the input from the surveys and the meeting.

The postal service is considering reducing the weekday hours from six hours and 15 minutes to six hours. Saturday hours will not change.

The other three options presented to customers called for a "discontinuation study for the office." One calls for roadside mailbox delivery and allowing customers to purchase retail services through their carrier or other access points.

The second calls for moving the services to a local business, which the postal service said typically offers longer hours than the post office. The third calls for relocating post office boxes to another post office.

Postal service spokeswoman Christine Dugas said the Old Mystic survey is part of a national effort by the postal service to save money by ensuring hours of operation at its post offices reflect actual workload.

"Most people opt for the change in hours. That's probably what we'll see here, but we won't know until the meeting," she said.
