Annual 'Catch a Curl' Youth Surf Classic planned for Sept. 13 at Westerly Town Beach

Westerly - New England Science & Sailing of Stonington, Westerly Recreation and the Narragansett Surf Shop will sponsor the third annual "Catch a Curl" youth surf classic Sept. 13 at the Westerly Town Beach.

The event, which is sponsored by the Eastern Surfing Association, attracted 29 competitors last year from as far away as Block Island and Cape Cod.

"We were just stoked with the turnout of participants and their families at the beach," said NESS program director and event organizer Mistral Dodson. "It was a fantastic, fun, family event. We accomplished everything we wanted to achieve in promoting beginner and advanced surfing, along with community support in a beach cleanup to help keep our beaches and ocean healthy and clean!"

Registration and warmups will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. with heats from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be novice, intermediate and advanced heats for boys and girls under 10, 11-14 and 15-18. Younger surfers can also have a parent in the water with them.

From noon to 3 p.m. there will also be a beach cleanup.

More details are on the Catch a Curl Facebook page or at nessf.org.

The competition will run the same weekend as the first Ocean Expo at Misquamicut State Beach, which will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Sept. 13 and 14.
