Preston — Residents voted overwhelmingly at Thursday’s annual town meeting to send the proposed 2015-16 town and school budgets to referendum May 19 without changes in the totals approved by the Board of Finance.

Residents and taxpayers will vote on the proposed $10.85 million school budget and the proposed $3.35 million town government budget in a referendum from noon to 8 p.m. May 19 at Town Hall.

Resident William Legler started Thursday’s town meeting with a motion to reduce the school budget by about $81,000 to the minimum allowed by the state based on enrollment. But Legler’s motion failed 18-8.

No other changes were proposed in either the town or school budgets.

Residents Thursday voted to approve placing $100,000 in the capital nonrecurring account, to pay the town’s 2015-16 debt service totaling $780,000 for various projects and to fund $85,000 in capital improvements for the schools. Those items did not have to go to referendum.

If the budgets are approved, they would require a tax rate of 23 mills, down by 0.14 mills from this year’s tax rate.
