Controversial event center developer withdraws Stonington application

Stonington — A developer has withdrawn an application for controversial event center which was slated to have its public hearing continued Tuesday before the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Roland Pampel & Alban Pampel III Trust, the owners of the 3.75-acre site between 786 and 804 Stonington Road (Route 1), were seeking a special use and Coastal Area Management permits to construct the Stonington Boathouse, an approximately 6,140-square-foot building with 250 seats and 80 parking spots just east of the entrance to Flemings Feed. The facility would be used to host weddings and other special events and would operate from May to October. It would have been located in close proximity to the The Meadows on Route 1 and Saltwater Farm Vineyard located off Route 1A, both of which also host events. The commission had opened the public hearing in May and heard from nearby business owners, including the two other event centers, who were opposed to the project.

In a e-mail to the planning office last week, project attorney Thomas Collier said engineering work related to environmental and FEMA requirements would not be completed in time for Tuesday’s meeting. He said the Boathouse developers had decided to withdraw the application but do not rule out filing a future application. He said they would communicate with the town before submitting an application.
